For us in the Northern Hemisphere – summer is coming! One of the most popular lists I see are ‘top beach reads’ or ‘top summer reads’ so I wasn’t entirely surprised to see this be a topic for Top Five Wednesday. That said, I’m pretty excited for this topic! It was definitely a challenge for me since I don’t really categorize my reads in this manner, but it was fun putting together a list! Without further ado, here are what books I think make good summer reads.
Sarah Dessen – I know this is an author and not really a book, but really any of her works are PERFECT for summer. It’s certainly the time of year when I seem to revisit them the most.
Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson – summer + road trip + romance = perfect summer read
Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot – There is just something about this light, fluffy book that I can imagine myself just sitting on a beach or by a pool reading.
Matched by Ally Condie – This is a somewhat fluffy (but not quite) dystopian YA novel. It makes for a quick, easy read.
A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin – I think summer is a good time to approach some of the longer books. Even though this is a beast of a book, it’s interesting enough to get you hooked and makes it hard to put down.

I’m currently doing a read through of all of Sarah Dessen’s books in publication order. I’m only on the second one, but it’s going okay so far!
I also can’t wait to read Morgan Matson’s books this summer too! 🙂

I did that the year before last and have been slowly going back through them. Her first few novels aren’t as strong as some of the middle or even later ones, but they are still enjoyable. My favorite is either Just Listen or Along for the Ride. Good luck! I need to get through more of Morgan Matson’s books also lol.

That’s good to hear! I’m only on my second Sarah Dessen book and it’s okay. But not the greatest. So I’m excited to get to her later books! 😊

They definitely get better. You’ll also start seeing references to characters from other books and locations and stuff. It’s pretty cool how they’re all subtly tied together.

I’ve only read Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson, but I have been meaning to read some of her others. Maybe I’ll actually read them this summer! Great List! 😀

I’ve had A Game of Thrones sitting on my shelf for two summers now and I still can’t get past Chapter Two lol.

I can definitely see the struggle. I didn’t try until I had seen the first few seasons of the show so I knew who was who. Not always an easy one though!

I’ve never actually read The Princess Diaries, but I love the movie! I love a light and fluffy read now and then. 🙂
Sadly I had a hard time with Game of Thrones. I read the first book and didn’t love it. I thought things would get better so I read the second book… but I also didn’t love it. Then I got halfway through the third before I realized it just wasn’t going to work for me. I love the TV show, but sadly I just don’t have patience for the books for some reason!

I won’t lie – the movie is better than the books, but the books are still enjoyable (at least the few I’ve read). They’re definitely fluffy which is nice. Game of Thrones is definitely not for everyone. They are not always easy to get through. I totally understand not having patience for them! lol

I always associate A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin with fall and winter, but you make a good point. In the summer I have more time to read a big book.

Ooh, I should have thought of Sarah Dessen! I’ve picked up quite a few of her books in charity shops but I haven’t read one yet. I’ll try to change that this summer.
